Cafe Scientifique – Hospital death rates

‘What do hospital death rates tell us?’

Monday, 7 October at 7pm in the bar of The Showroom

Admission is free and no need to sign up.

Death rates are often used to judge the quality of hospital care and identify poorly-performing hospitals. These statistics have been used to estimate that hundreds of people died unnecessarily at Stafford Hospital and show that people are more likely to die if they are admitted to hospital at the weekend. This presentation will explain how death rates are calculated and analysed, identify common misconceptions and consider whether hospital death rates really do reflect quality of hospital care.

Sharpen your interest and knowledge of science in an informal and friendly atmosphere. Cafe Scientifique is an opportunity for all members of the public to meet practising scientists. Take part in a debate/discussion around a drink or plate of food at the Showroom Bar.
