This case study focusses on the use of Skype to support students who are away from the University for their study or placement. The use of this technology was considered to improve supervision and isolation while away from the university.
Two modules were identified by tutors as particularly benefiting from online student support and after some investigation it was decided that Skype would be a useful platform to deliver this. Students set up an account on Skype and had test calls with tutors prior to going abroad. Consideration had to be given to the time difference between the UK and where the students were based, but successful online meetings took place in New Zealand, Canada and China.
The instant messaging facility and recording of video chat meant that as well as having live conversations with their tutors, students could also benefit from the clarification of key points and refer back to the sessions as many times as necessary.
The tutors involved said that the use of Skype made it easier to instigate academic conversation and build a much stronger student/tutor relationship, while the students felt much more connected to the University. You can read more about this approach by reading the two-page case study entitled: Providing student support by video chat.
