From the 20th April we will be running the following sessions as a part of the Refreshing e-learning at SHU initiative. These sessions focus on some of the practicalities of e-learning, and some will give staff the opportunity to consider the topics particularly in the context of Blackboard 9. Dates will be released after the break, and you will be able to book through this blog as before.
Good Practice in Blackboard 9 Site Design and Preparation
This hands-on workshop includes activities and discussion to promote effective site design within Blackboard. Based on student feedback generated through research, participants will learn about key principles of good practice and how to identify and address factors impacting on students’ experience of learning online. There will be optional supported time at the end of the session for interested participants to put these principles into practice on 2010/11 sites inside the Blackboard 9 Site Development System.
Engaging students online
This session will explore some of the issues around student engagement online. Participants will be invited to share barriers encountered to engaging students in e-learning, discuss issues and share contexts. Participants will also be invited to examine possible reasons for barriers to online engagement as well as being introduced to some theoretical perspectives and practical approaches that can be applied to enhance online engagement in practice.
Enabling student collaboration in Blackboard 9
PC lab workshop. 1 hour with optional further time for working in Bb9 with support
This session gives staff the opportunity to look at the use of tools in Blackboard 9 for supporting and facilitating collaborative learning activities. Participants will consider the benefits and possibilities of various tools, and through the use of case studies and examples, plan for their use within their own context. As well as discussion and planning, participants will be able to practice setting tools up in Blackboard 9.
Communicating with students in Blackboard 9
This workshop focuses on some approaches to, and practicalities of communicating with students using Blackboard. Participants will consider the relationship between online and offline communication, and have the opportunity to explore and practice with the features of Blackboard 9 that lend themselves to communication.
Formative diagnostic testing in Blackboard
This session promotes the practical benefits and uses of automated testing and feedback in Blackboard. Formative and diagnostic uses will be explored, along with best practice guidance for using each of the different types of test question available in Blackboard and tips on writing effective objective questions and feedback to test a range of cognitive skills.
Possibilities in online formative assessment
This session explores the approaches to and practical applications of online formative assessment and feedback. It will look at various tools available within Blackboard to support formative assessment and feedback, and promote approaches staff have taken to exploit these opportunities within their learning and teaching. Through case studies, activities and group discussions, participants will be encouraged to think about how they might embed online formative assessment and feedback in their practice, and consider the practicalities of doing so.
