This is the fourth in a series of posts exploring the 6 guiding principles behind why we promote e-learning at Sheffield Hallam University. Each of the principles underscores the benefits of integrating e-learning opportunities into the curriculum, and each is supported here by student quotes from research into how our students use technology to support and enhance their learning. Today’s guiding principle:
Authentic learning opportunities that draw on high quality learning resources, real-world case studies and valid assessment tasks
Students today have access to an increased amount of information resources online, including online journals, e-books and other information and data on the internet. This presents opportunities that were previously not possible.
“I used LitSearch as well as other internet resources for which is a good example of technology actually being a great help. As much of the literature in this area is American it might be quite difficult for me to access this without the ease of the internet.”
There is the potential for more authentic learning and assessment opportunities which tap into existing data and information for case studies. In addition, it is now easier to use a different types of learning materials such as multimedia in student learning activities.
“One of the best things about this site is how much the staff input to it, there are videos of mock interviews which the staff have made and there are resources continually added.”
For further information on all the guiding principles, you can read them in a handout we’ve created.
