Robert Winston Building Updates

Wednesday 10 January 2018

Update from the Estates team
Due to recent inclement weather the installation of the units forming the Robert Winston Annex have been delayed.  The installation of the cabins is a high risk endeavour as they need to be placed in-situ by crane and as such are vulnerable to high winds, meaning the planned installation date was postponed. All cabins were delivered and installed before the Christmas break.

The consequence of the delay is that the occupation date has slipped but we are working with the contractor to plan scenarios that will enable us to make up some lost time by bringing in additional resource or changing the phasing planning.  It is now expected that the units will be available for teaching from the week commencing 5th February.

Colleagues in Timetabling have made alternative arrangements for timetabled teaching until week commencing 5th February. Please accept our sincere apologies for this delay. We recognise the disruption this causes, but we are at the mercy of the elements.  We will do everything we can to both make as much time back where we can and keep all parties informed throughout.

If you have any queries or concerns about this please contact the Programme Management Office: EstatesPMO@shu.ac.uk

From Monday 30 October a lightweight steel frame will be delivered and erected on top of the finished foundations of the Robert Winston Building Annexe, the work is expected to take one week.

A crane will be used for this work, and the road between RWB and Woodville Teaching Block will be closed during this time. Additionally, please be aware that the council owned parking bays in front of RWB (across the road) will be closed all week for access to the site.

The trees within the garden area of the quad have been removed by landscapers.

From Monday 2 October you can expect to hear machinery noise on site for a duration of two weeks as contractor continue work in the quad area:

  • w/c Monday 2 October – strip the site area and removal of the plants and vegetation ready for groundworks to start
  • w/c Monday 9 October – begin excavation for foundations

Work has begun on site, in the Robert Winston Building Quad area:

  • the contractors site cabins are in place
  • the site hoarding will be completed over the next week
  • vegetation will be removed, including the tree (planned for Mon 18 & Tue 19)

Unfortunately the plants and vegetation in the quad can not be re-purposed for staff use due to the presence of contoneaster; which is classified as an invasive species and damaging to the environment.

The new modular building, named the Robert Winston Building Annexe has been granted planning permission.

Week commencing 4th of September there will be some low key activity taking place at RWB, gaining momentum on site as the project progresses.

Floor layouts and a site plan have been made available by Estates Development and Sustainability to demonstrate the efforts to ensure the facility is of the highest quality, in line with other University buildings.
