Message sent on behalf of Mark Swales, chief estates and facilities officer
Sheffield Hallam University is now a smokefree campus. As part of our commitment to enabling healthier lives and for the wellbeing of our staff and students, smoking or vaping is not permitted anywhere on campus or next to University building entrances. New signs will be appearing over the next few weeks to make this clear and the University Leadership Team is looking to all staff to support this.
We have consulted about introducing this policy and it has been welcomed by staff and students. I know some staff here smoke and, although it is their right to do so when not on University premises or on University business, we need to create a safe and healthy atmosphere across campus. We will not be facilitating smoking on site, which encourages the normalisation of smoking for our student population, and line managers should not agree breaks with members of staff specifically for the purpose of smoking. If you would like help with managing your smoking – or want to quit altogether – use this form to sign up for information about the support that’s available.
Smoking is the biggest killer in Sheffield; one in two life-time tobacco users die from it and, on average, 16 people die every week. It’s an addiction which starts when people are young and every day 5 children in Sheffield begin smoking. If you would like to be one of our smokefree champions, receive training on how to approach someone who is smoking on site and understand the support that is available to help people quit, please contact Trevor Cooper.
Thank you everyone for your support on this.
Kind regards,
Mark Swales
