1918 Project – Healthcare

We invite you to attend an open day at Collegiate Hall, which 100 years ago served as the “Third Northern General Base Hospital”, treated some 70,000 wounded soldiers.

In the context of Collegiate Hall, we welcome Consultant Physician Emeritus Dr Derek Cullen; editor of “Sheffield Cares for the Wounded”, and Consultant Radiologist Emeritus Dr Mike Collins, to provide a rich insight into the Third Northern General Base Hospital, and The Third West Riding Field Ambulance Service made up of Sheffield health care professionals, looking at the lives of these individuals, and how much Healthcare has progressed in the last 100 years.

Along with some historical context, our lecturers in: Nursing, Operating Department Practice, Biosciences, and Diagnostic Radiography will be delivering short punchy talks exploring their role in healthcare and allowing students to see the significant changes in modern medicine.

Alongside these talks, we will be showcasing a host of artefacts from the period, including an original Nurses Uniform and Badge from the Collegiate Hall site, and numerous other artefacts including a letter from Winston Churchill to the Nurses at Collegiate Hall commemorating their work; offering a real unique opportunity to take a glimpse into these people’s lives to whom we owe so much.”
