Research seminar: Inequality, Realism and the Capability Approach

The Disparities and Global Perspectives Research Group are happy to present the forthcoming seminar: Inequality, Realism and the Capability Approach.

In this networking seminar, Dr. Katie Shearn, will outline her work which investigates life-course, social and health inequalities through a realist perspective.  This work seeks to make explicit the cultural, economic and political structures that create health inequalities.  The potential for re-framing social and health inequalities as capability inequalities is discussed alongside possible limitations.   Real-world examples illustrating the concepts are presented throughout, drawing on Katie’s thesis “Delivering positive youth sexual health services: a realist evaluation” and current work looking at 0-19 services in Doncaster and person-centred care in Sheffield.  Ample time will be given for discussion and networking.  Lunch will be served from 12.30.

Katie Shearn is the cluster lead for Health and Wellbeing across the Lifecourse within the Disparities and Global Perspectives Research Group.
