We all need a cure from the dreaded boredom from time to time, so we need places to go and socialise with friends. Here are my top 5 places in Sheffield.
- Wetherspoons
You cannot beat a cheap and cheerful pint or cheap food as it goes. So any number of the Wetherspoons across Sheffield are an ideal place for you and your friends to meet up. Some have a more of ‘studenty’ vibe compared to others – such as The Benjamin Huntsman and The Sheaf Island.
- The Treehouse Boardgame Cafe
Something else I’ve enjoyed doing is going to The Treehouse Boardgame Cafe next to The Forge Halls and near Aldi. As the name suggests, it’s a café where you can play board games. They range from the not so common to the very common like Scrabble and Cards Against Humanity. This social setting is also good as it’s a student scene, so you and your group won’t be drowned out by the older generation!
- Kelham Island
One of my favourite things to do in Sheffield is either go for a walk around Kelham Island or enjoy a pub crawl there. From the award-winning pubs The Kelham Tavern and The Fat Cat to The Riverside, these are great places and definitely worth visiting. You can even go to the Kelham Island Museum or on a tour of Kelham Island Brewery. A personal favourite of mine is to enjoy a pint of Pale Rider which is brewed there and a famous ale nationally. I typically walk to Kelham Island, but a taxi down there from West Street isn’t expensive.
- Devonshire Green
For the past two years in Sheffield when the sun has been out in the spring and summer, I’ve gone to Devonshire Green with friends and cooked up a barbeque (with a few cans!) That got me through the late deadlines. It was always busy which made it a good atmosphere. But make sure you get there early as it does get quite busy. One for next year perhaps now the weather has changed!
- Vintage shops on Division Street/West Street
Lastly, one of my favourite things to do with friends is go shopping round Division Street and West Street in the vintage clothes shops. I definitely recommend Cow, Mooch Vintage, Freshmans and Vulgar. It’s always a bonus when these shops offer student discounts – whether that’s 10% or even 20%! The prices in these shops vary but you can always guarantee a bargain somewhere.
