How to Conquer Final Year After a Work Placement

I’m sure you’ve heard about final year stresses and returning after placement can seem daunting. But don’t worry, you’re not alone; I understand the fears, worries and challenges that run alongside your return to Uni.

Going on placement was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Having enjoyed a year in the industry and learning about the practicalities of working life, I was excited to return and smash final year, although a little hesitant at getting back into the swing of it. But utilising the support of those around me and adapting my work life really helped me to continue on my path to graduation.

I know how stressful final year can be with deadlines looming, especially when you’re worried and sleep-deprived, so here are some tips for easing back into life at Hallam:

Get a Planner

Not only did I have coursework and group projects, I was also the president of a faculty-led society, a course rep, a placement rep and even had a few part-time jobs on-campus. If you’re involved in many different activities, being organised is essential. Prioritise and manage your time with diaries and organisers. You can also sync your timetable to your Google Calendar so that you always have your uni timetable on-the-go. And don’t forget to pencil in some time for yourself. Whether it’s just a long walk or a coffee, it’s always good to take a breather and relax!

Ask for Help
I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to sit down with someone and talk it through when you’re stressed out. Whenever I’m confused about an assignment or if I don’t understand something I learnt in class, I always clarify the difficulties with my seminar tutors. The same goes for any worries in day-to-day life. The University and the Students’ Union offer a range of services from wellbeing to financial help, so utilise all the resources you can. The staff members at Hallam are so friendly and always willing to help – don’t suffer in silence.

Use the Careers and Employability Centre
The Careers and Employability Centre is the perfect place to go if you are looking to start your graduate job hunt. Having been offer my placement thanks to the feedback I received from a mock presentation and interview I had with an adviser, I’ve used their services numerous times throughout my final year. From CV checks to one-to-one career guidance sessions, they’ll certainly help you enhance your employability. The career fairs are also a great opportunity to put your name out there, showcase your personality and network with prospective employers.

Immerse Yourself in Uni Activities
I’m someone who loves getting to know people and getting involved in activities that are happening at Hallam, so I’d definitely recommend taking part in extracurricular activities. Whether it’s joining a society or sports team, taking part in a one-off volunteering opportunity or even simply going to watch a Varsity match, being part of Team Hallam and having these picture-perfect moments is undeniably worth it. After all, it’s your final year and you do want to make some great memories!

Use the Libraries
The library is a good place to escape from all the noise and get cracking on an assignment. I usually find a quiet study area and it always helps me get into the right frame of mind. With the majority of people surrounding you also working hard, you have no choice but to focus on your assignments. You’ll also have all the books and journals you’ll ever need, right at your fingertips.

Reward Yourself
Small rewards are a great way to keep your motivation level up. Whether it’s dinner with friends, a night out or simply just a piece of cake, knowing there is a little treat at the end of all your hard work really helps to stay on course. And don’t forget that whilst good grades are important, your wellbeing should be your top priority. So don’t be too hard on yourself- pick yourself up and just keep going!

In spite of all the stress, my final year was absolutely wonderful. The challenges that came my way have made me even stronger and I’m feeling confident to begin my journey after graduation. Be dedicated and passionate, and you will excel in final year. Put in the work, take care of yourself and surround yourself with good friends and support, and you should be just fine!
