Everything is finally complete – what a feeling! A feeling I’m sure many of you are getting now that the assignments and exams are getting
further and further behind you, and now that your results are coming through.
Last week I received my final results for my third year, and therefore the results for my entire degree! Finishing with a 1st overall, needless to say, I am overjoyed. Fingers crossed, a lot of you guys are too.
It’s definitely a relief after three years of hard work, stress and, let’s be real, tears – plus it means we can have a well-deserved rest.
This period of my university experience is certainly an odd one, and while I’m planning on going into a masters in September, with many of my friends sticking around in Sheffield too, the end of my degree has perhaps not sunk in as much as it should have.
I know a lot of you will now be feeling a mixture of emotions: relief and happiness, but also loss and sadness over your university experience coming to an end. Remember the cliché: don’t be sad that it’s over, be happy that it happened, because, for me at least, university is what has made me independent, allowed me to grow, helped me find new hobbies and opportunities, and given me a range of new friends.
So… it’s time for the next chapter of our lives. For me, this means that actually very little will be changing, as I said, I’m going to
do a masters here at Hallam but I’m looking forward to new adventures in Public Relations (instead of Media which I’ve studied for three years), I’m moving to a slightly different area of the city centre for the next year, and I’m going to be living with a new group of my closest friends.
It’s an exciting time, and while I wait for September to roll around, I’m working with the Events team doing a range of things for different conferences, events and, of course, graduation.
Let us know below how you’re feeling now that your degree is over, and what your plans are for the coming months.
Your last summer as a student, and your first as a graduand (that being the fancy term for a person who is about to receive an academic degree) has fast approached and with that, we can finally announce that:
Our graduation website – all sparkling, new and updated – is now live for the class of 2018!
This website is going to act as your graduation bible, with all the information you should need about your upcoming graduation process from what to do before the day, on the day or if you’re attending an international ceremony.
The graduation ceremonies for 2018 seem to be creeping up on us, so please do take a look at the new website to find out all of the information you need for November.
REMEMBER – ticket bookings don’t open until 1st August, so please don’t worry about this yet!
Following the retirement announcement of our current Chancellor Professor the Lord Robert Winston, Sheffield Hallam University were delighted to announce in April that Baroness Helena Kennedy QC will become our new Chancellor!
She is a leading barrister, who has dedicated her career to promoting human rights, championing civil liberties, and achieving social justice. She already has a strong connection with Sheffield Hallam University, as a patron of the ‘Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice’ at the Collegiate Campus as well as receiving her honorary doctorate from the University in 2014.
In terms of the Graduation ceremonies, we’re not quite sure yet if/how much Baroness Kennedy will be able to join us for the occasion, but we do hope that ourselves and many of you have the chance to meet and receive your award from our fantastic new Chancellor.
I’m Rachel, a Graduation Events Assistant in the Graduation Office here at Sheffield Hallam University. I am also a 3rd year student and have just completed my course (and received my dissertation grade back – scary!) so believe me, I understand what this time of year means to us all.
It’s honestly so crazy that my three year BA Media course has finally come to an end, and after a stressful few months I am more than grateful that I didn’t have any exams this year. Instead, I had a gruelling couple of semesters completing my assignments and my dissertation.
Now with everything handed in, a dissertation printed and bound in my hands, and with the grades coming back, I am definitely feeling a little lost knowing that now I can just sit back and wait to celebrate at my graduation.
So what’s next? Well, it’s completely normal to feel a little lost after three years of the same routine, and completely normal to feel unsure where your next steps are going to be taken, especially if you don’t have any plans right away – just remember, taking some time to regather is totally okay.
However, for me, I’ve accepted a place on a masters course, where I will continue studying on the same floor as I have been for the last three years (is that cheating?) as I move from BAMedia to MAPublic Relations.
In the meantime, while I wait for my graduation and the start of my new course, I am working in the Graduation Office (for the second year in a row) ALL summer! You’ll probably get to know me if you email Graduation on graduation@shu.ac.uk or call us on 0114 225 5353, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions!
I can’t wait to work on graduation AND attend graduation this year – so I shall see you all there, one way or another! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about my role, or about being a student and working for the university 🙂
It’s been an exciting couple of weeks with graduation dates being released, but we’ve noticed that a lot of you are now thinking about booking your tickets. To clear up any confusion, I’m going to tell you all you need to know at this stage…
● Ticket bookings do not open until Wednesday 1 August. There is nothing you can do until this date with regards to your tickets, so long as you can see your ceremony date on My Student Record and your contact details are all up to date, you’ve done all you can do for now.
● We guarantee that you will receive three guest tickets, plus your own graduate ticket. You can apply for up to 10 tickets on the 1st August, but you’ll receive your allocation once bookings have closed on 26th October.
● Your graduate ticket and any guests under 5 are free, but all other guest tickets will cost £10 each. We have to charge for tickets to cover the hire cost of the City Hall, but it does make for a fantastic venue for you to celebrate your achievement in!
● When you book your tickets, you’ll be told to share any special requirements that you or your guests have, whether this be mobility issues, vertigo, phobias or anything else you think we may need to know about. We can accommodate any request that you have, but please do remember to share it with us before ticket bookings close!
We hope that this will clear up a few questions that you have, but of course if you have any other concerns or queries then please don’t hesitate to contact us (graduation@shu.ac.uk).
