Work visa opportunities – Tier 2 (general)

The Tier 2 (General) visa allows internationals graduates to work full time in the UK after graduating, providing they meet the necessary criteria. It is possible for eligible family members of the Tier 2 visa holder (husband/wife/civil partner/children) to get a Tier 2 Dependant visa.

There are concessions for international graduates who switch from a Tier 4 visa to a Tier 2 visa in the UK. In order to be eligible to switch to a Tier 2 visa in the UK, these conditions must be met:

  • The job offer must be from a company which has a Tier 2 licence.
  • The graduate must have successfully completed an undergraduate or postgraduate course.
  • The graduate must be prepared to show the necessary maintenance in their bank account. This is £945 which must be held continuously for 90 days prior to the visa application.
  • The job must be listed in either of these Home Office documents: The Codes of Practice or The Shortage Occupation List.
  • The job must meet minimum salary conditions – see below

Minimum Salary

The job must meet specified minimum salary levels. If the graduate is switching from a Tier 4 visa to a Tier 2 visa inside the UK then the graduate is considered a ‘new entrant’. The salary for new entrants must be no lower than £20,800 or the minimum salary specified by the Home Office for that job (whichever is higher) in The Codes of Practice or The Shortage Occupation List.

Here are some examples of jobs* which are currently eligible for a Tier 2 visa and are particularly applicable to Sheffield Hallam courses and graduates:

  • Engineer professionals
  • IT and telecommunication professionals
  • Health professionals (e.g. occupational therapists/health adviser, physiotherapists, nurses, midwives)
  • Teaching professionals
  • Legal professionals
  • Business project management professionals
  • Architects
  • Construction project professionals
  • Social workers
  • Financial and sales accounts professionals

(* Please note these are examples only, and the list of eligible jobs can change, subject to UK Government policy.)

Weston Park May Fayre

Weston Park is a fantastic public park in the heart of Sheffield, running alongside Weston Park Museum and Mappin Art Gallery.

You can take a stroll through the Weston Park May Fayre and see the Victorian bandstand in all its glory. Take a look through vintage wares, take a ride on the helter skelter and grab a bite to eat at this fantastic fayre.

We are very pleased to announce that Sheffield Hallam University has been nominated in several categories for the THELM Awards 2017!

The Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards are now in their ninth year, celebrating teams who work in the engine rooms of institutions, laying the foundations for future success.

We have been nominated in the Outstanding Estates Strategy and Outstanding Student Admissions Strategy categories, with the ceremony taking place on Thursday 22 June – wish us luck!

Inspirational Student Award winner Ong Yu Jing talks to SHU GoGlobal

We were very pleased to be able to announce the 2017 winners of the Inspirational Student Awards in last month’s newsletter. Here, we speak to one of the winners, Ong Yu Jing from INTI in Malaysia, about her experience as a student inspiring others.

How do you feel about being nominated for an Inspirational Student Award?
When I was notified about the nomination, I felt both ecstatic and in disbelief. I had no prior knowledge about the award and was honestly stunned by the announcement. I appreciate the support I have from the faculty and Sheffield Hallam University and I am thankful for this recognition.

What is the main thing you have learned so far while studying your degree?
A key thing which I have taken away from my time during my undergraduate studies is realising the power of design processes and the importance of self-discovery through these processes.

What is the best thing you have experienced about studying a Sheffield Hallam degree?
I think the best thing I have encountered is the opportunity to be extremely present in everything I have done, be it design, meeting people or even developing my soft skills -leadership, public speaking. It has also increased my confidence level and I am not afraid to speak my mind to contribute to different causes. The degree has opened numerous doors for me to hone my skills in various areas and engage myself in various activities.

The best ways of us improving our courses and student experience is when we ask you for feedback and to tell us what is and what isn’t working! Right now is your chance to make a difference and improve how things work for students in the years to come.

You should have received an email with a link to the student experience survey, which will ask you about various aspects of your study, including course material, learning environment and the staff that help to guide you through your studies. There is also the opportunity to nominate inspirational staff that you feel have made a real impact on you and your learning.

Working in the UK after studies

At this time of the year, you are probably thinking about your plans for finding a job after completing your studies. The following announcements are important for international students who wish to stay in the UK after graduating and want to find out about work visa rules.

Special Working in the UK after studies – internships

On Friday 7 April we hosted a fantastic event on the Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa scheme. The session was attended by over 50 international students. This visa scheme enables international graduates to work as interns in the UK after graduation.

The event featured Zenia Chopra from the company “Access Tier 5.” We also had a great talk by a SHU international graduate, Castor Merino. He shared his experiences of working in the UK under the Tier 5 GAE scheme and with a Tier 2 (General) visa.

Special Working in the UK after studies – Tier 2 (General)

When: 23 June  Time: 4-5.30pm Where: Adsetts 6620

This is a special and unique event focused specifically on the Tier 2 (General) work visa rules. Tier 2 (General) is one of the most popular visa categories for international graduates who wish to work full time.

We will concentrate specifically on the Tier 2 visa rules and explain eligibility rules. We will cover topics such as salary thresholds and eligible jobs. There will also be a Q&A session. We will also have SHU international graduates who have successfully got Tier 2 work visas. They will share their tips and experiences. You will have the opportunity to ask them any questions you may have.

Working in the UK after studies – All work visas

When: 31 May Time: 3-4pm Where: Owen 942

This is a presentation covering all the main types of work visas which are relevant for international graduates including: Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur, Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme, Tier 2 (General), Tier 5 Youth Mobility, Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange. It is relevant for international students who are currently here on Tier 4 visas and wish to learn more about the range of work visas available, and the eligibility criteria. The presentation will look at each visa criteria in detail and there will be time for a Q & A session at the end.

We will also launch our new online resource all about work visas! We will showcase the interactive materials, which includes case studies, videos and tips to maximise your success.

The University will be closed during Easter!

The University will be closed between 14 – 18 April, but the libraries at City (Adsetts) and Collegiate will remain open 24/7.

Here are some tips from the Library:

  • Please remember to bring your SHU Card to enter the libraries!
  • •The Helpdesk will be closed but students can access books, journals and all electronic materials, printing, copying
  • Students can still top up their print or papercut account online, or pay library fines
  • Vending machines are available for you to use (and the coffee machine in Adsetts for those needing caffeine!)
  • Security staff will be there to help wherever they can with directional enquiries or filling up printers.
  • Students needing help can contact 0114 2253333 for 24/7 help with library and IT enquiries
  • We also recommend that students use the library gateway to search for answers to questions too – there are links to blogs, guides, and FAQs plus our Twitter feed @shu_library

The University will re-open as normal from Wednesday 19 April.
