Here is some information from the wider university service areas.

Scam targeting international students

We have been made aware that international students are being approached by an individual claiming to be SHU lecturer who has lost their purse and has no money for the train ticket home. International students are asked to give money with the promise it will be repaid the next day.

This is a SCAM. Please do not give money to such individuals, if you are approached then please do not give the individual any money or personal details (passport numbers etc.). The incidents have already been reported to the police, but if this has happened to you – please contact Hallam Union Advice Centre (advicecentre@shu.ac.uk or call 0114 225 4148) as a matter of urgency.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to call us on: 0114 225 3813 or email: internationalexperience@shu.ac.uk

Right to Rent Checks

Are you living in privately rented accommodation?

If so then you need to be aware that from 1st February 2016 onwards, landlords of private rental accommodation will be responsible for carrying out ‘right to rent’ checks to ensure that their tenants have the right to reside in the UK. The requirement to carry out right to rent checks applies to all adults (aged 18 and over).

Therefore all students living in private rented accommodation will need to present their original passport, or a combination of acceptable documents to prove they have the right to reside in the UK for the duration of their tenancy agreement.

International students will also have to present their visa and biometric residence permit (see List B).

Landlords are required to keep copies of the documents they check.

This will not affect students living in halls of residence as they are not subject to right to rent checks.

If you have further questions about this you can speak to an International Experience Adviser in a daily drop in appointment.

Free course online – Academic Integrity: Values, Skills, Action

What is academic integrity? Why is it so important in academia? And how can you, as a student at university, achieve with integrity and honesty?

These are some of the important questions we’ll explore over the four weeks of the course. As we do so, you will hear from the lead educator as well as the perspectives of students like you.

Specifically, each week contains videos, articles, activities and quizzes that will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful and ethical learner. There will also be opportunities for you to discuss your ideas with other students on the course and learn from their experiences and points of view.

By the end of the course, we hope you’ll come to understand the meaning of academic integrity and how to avoid academic dishonesty, misconduct and plagiarism but more importantly we hope you will also embrace the values associated with academic integrity as your own.

Additionally, and equally importantly, this course will help you develop study skills and academic writing skills needed to act in accordance with those values, and thus achieve with integrity.
