“I first did an Associate Degree in Applied Social Studies with Urban Studies in Community College at City University Hong Kong. This led me to do the top up course, Applied Social Science at SCOPE, which is in partnership with Sheffield Hallam. Due to my outstanding academic performance I was able to obtain a scholarship to study a semester doing postgraduate credits at Sheffield Hallam.
My first impressions of Sheffield Hallam were that it is modern, especially the library, very much like SCOPE. I particularly like the classes in terms of the mix of international students and small class sizes which encourage communication and group discussions, and lecturers get to know you more which is very different to SCOPE.
The modules that I studied had field trips which encouraged me to explore British culture, and faculty support has been great too.
I have found the support that the International Experience Team provide has been great and the programme of SHU GoGlobal activities has given me experiences of British culture, especially in the events, activities and particularly trips they have provided. I have enjoyed being a Culture Connect mentee during my time here and being matched to a local student as a mentor has helped me a lot in adjusting to local culture. At SCOPE, I mentored incoming US students in a group mentoring scheme where two local (Hong Kong) students would mentor three US students. I would show them around key landmarks around Hong Kong and talk about the local culture.
I have been fortunate to attend my graduation at Sheffield Hallam, it will be an experience that I will never forget. I was shocked to hear a live violin orchestra performing at the ceremony! I felt that the event was steeped in tradition which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Thanks to my academic achievements at SCOPE and SHU, I have been able to pursue a Master of Urban Planning at the University of Sydney in early 2017.
I would say that my semester at Sheffield has given me unforgettable life experiences for my future studies.”

Second-year International Finance and Banking student, Karabo Phalane received the 2016 Inspirational Award from Sheffield Hallam University and also got an opportunity to visit the University.
Karabo said “the people were very friendly as well as the students who I met with, they are very accommodating individuals who looked after me from the moment I arrived at the airport until I left”
“My experience at Canary Wharf was an eye opener…being in that atmosphere made me readjust my definition of making it as banking and finance student”.

From the 23 November, Sheffield Hallam welcomed Karabo Phalane, our Inspirational Student Award winner from the Botswana Accountancy College! I got to sit down and talk to the man himself and ask him about his course, what he thinks of Sheffield and his role as an example to other students.
During his week long visit to Sheffield Hallam, Karabo had the opportunity to meet key staff from his faculty, the International Experience Team and see some of the UK, including a trip to Bakewell and London.
I firstly asked him about his course and coming to Sheffield, he said
“it gives a platform for portfolio and risk assessment and I have an interest in becoming a financial analyst. I also have an interest in derivatives and love my numbers! The information I got on Blackboard through a video about accreditation meant I knew it was the right direction for me.
I’ve been meeting with a lot of people about my course, the staff were keen to know feedback about it and my placement. It was great for the experience and exposure in the industry. The placement was wonderful and they were very accommodating.”
It was also interesting to know Karabo’s role as a course rep, with him taking on board students’ views and acting as a bridge between staff and students, as well as winning the Inspirational Student Award
“I became the organiser and go-to guy, students could tell me if they were having trouble and I could relay those messages across. It built my leadership skills and I had to be very organised, including setting up a Whatsapp group for students.
I like to lead by example, asking questions first to guest lecturers and going on placements, showing ‘if he can do it, then so can we’. People were saying ‘wow, he’s going to the UK!’ I always like to give advice where I can to the younger level 4 students too and be balanced with staff and students.”

Liang Hiang (pictured), Jenny Teoh and Jia Ni, studying Sheffield Hallam’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design in INTI, were semi finalists in the International Adobe Design Achievement Awards 2016.
The ADAA is an international digital media competition for student creators. This award is connected to industry professionals, academic leaders, and top brands, and its aim is to launch the next generation of student careers.
Three entries from ICAD BA (Hons) Graphic Design, 3+0 Sheffield Hallam University out from the total 5304 entrants worldwide were selected as semi finalists.
Graduation at the ballroom of Intercontinental Hotel Kowloon, Hong Kong is a sight to behold; this year over 500 new SHU graduates from our partner institutions in Hong Kong had the pleasure of shaking the hand of our Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chris Husbands in this ceremony especially for our Hong Kong graduates.
What is particularly impressive about the Hong Kong ceremony is the importance of the families and the part that they have played in their relative’s success. The vast majority of graduates are the first in their families to complete a degree level education, so it’s a momentous occasion for all to celebrate.
A key part of the celebration is the closing speeches by two students who call for a vote of thanks for their families for all the support they have been given, this is done in both English and Cantonese and the students turnaround en masse to thank their parents. Students are given bunches of flowers and colourful soft toys as gifts to celebrate the day, and took the opportunity to take photos with their tutors to enable them to reflect on their achievements over the course.
Last month, our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Husbands, and his team visited our partners at SCOPE (the School of Continuing and Professional Education at City University) in Hong Kong. Here, David Chan describes his visit to their class and graduation ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor had a face-to-face discussion with a group of 21 students for the BA (Honours) Applied Social Science course, on the morning of 24 October 2016. Students were extremely inspired by the Vice-Chancellor’s encouragement and blessings. Students were further touched by the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to promoting international collaborative provision between Hong Kong and the UK.
Of equal importance, Dr. David Bowles, Principal Lecturer, Department of Psychology, Sociology and Politics and Leader of Business Development, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Love and Romance’ for the full-time degree programme (BAASS), which has been running since being launched in October 2016. The guest lecture on was well received by the whole class (over 50), and students were enlightened and enriched by the true meaning of love and romance in modern society through the talk. David’s elaboration on those empirical research findings from psychology was most thought-provoking.
Prof. Chris Husbands, Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University and James Richardson, Director of International Development visited Sino-British College in Shanghai in October.
Sino-British College in Shanghai is our newest educational partner in China. Twenty five students from China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Uganda and Zimbabwe have now enrolled on the BA (Honours) Business Management which is delivered entirely at Sino-British College.
Professor Husbands gave a guest lecture on the role of universities in the 21st century attended by students, staff and external guests. At the end of the lecture, Sheffield Hallam’s Vice-Chancellor had an informal meeting with our students at Sino-British College, which left a lasting impression.

ICAD DAY 2016
ICAD Day is an annual event organised by INTI Center for Art and Design, and it was held on the 9 September 2016 of this year. This event showcases the achievements of students and staff of ICAD, as well as the faculty’s future plans and activities. Success stories of winners had been shared with the purpose of motivating the students to achieve greater successes.
Students get a chance to participate in activities such as The Longest Doodle Challenge, Cosplay Challenge and Photographic Picnic.
Two of our Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) students from 2012 intake recently returned to Sheffield to explore the place that they studied back in summer 2012. Here’s a brief account of their stay here reminiscing their old memories and exploring places in the UK that they didn’t cover when they were here as students four years ago.
Jethro Wong, studied BA Hon Business with E-Commerce and Marketing said “After completing my studies I went back to Malaysia and worked for 3 months for a marketing company. Afterwards I moved to work for an enterprise mobility company, focusing on IT security which is where I am currently working now. The course that I studied at Sheffield Hallam made it possible to find a graduate job back in Malaysia and to reach where I am today. Coming back to Sheffield made me realise how quickly time flies and I am looking forward to exploring places in the UK which I didn’t have the chance to previously. I am especially looking forward to going to places such as Durham and Lincoln.”
Kimberly Boey, who also studied BA Hon Business with E-Commerce and Marketing, said “When I went back to Malaysia, I did various jobs related to digital marketing and mobile advertising which are both rapidly developing areas in Malaysia. Afterwards, I spent two years working for an advertising network company focusing on sales and business development which I enjoyed. Coming back to Sheffield after four years, it doesn’t feel like it has been that long! I still remember all the places I used to go, and they are still there! There are also new places too and I have missed Sunday roasts in the UK, which you cannot get in Malaysia. I am looking forward to exploring the Peak District during my holiday here, as I want to explore the views and scenery of my favourite film, Pride and Prejudice.”
