On 12th October a group of Sheffield Hallam students travelled to Sino-British College (SBC) in Shanghai to take part in the PAL Mentoring scheme. There they worked with SBC students enrolled in the BA (Hons) Business Management course, which is a degree delivered and facilitated by both Universities.

The students, Molly Hawkins, Mollie Shinwell, Lynsey Appleton and Scott Brown were selected to participate from a pool of applicants from the SHU Business School.

Mollie Shemwell says of her experience,

“I mentored fellow students at the college by facilitating their learning in seminars, advising on personal development sessions and delivering group sessions on the resources available online to help with assignments and studying.

The overall experience was extremely helpful in all aspects and I would highly recommend any student who wants to flourish in becoming more interculturally competent to invest time to undertake an opportunity like the experience I had in SBC Shanghai.”

The mentors will maintain contact with their student group and guide them through to completion of their studies. The SBC programme is part of SHU’s university-wide initiative support students at collaborative partners all over the world.

Botswana Accountancy College’s International Finance and Banking Society hosted the first ever Annual Banking and Finance Competition on Friday 5 October. It is led by Mrs Cynthia Chakahwa, who is a Senior Lecturer at BAC’s School of Business and Leisure.

The competition seeks to capture the contestants’ hidden talents through an industry skills competition. The BA (Hons) International Finance and Banking students were given current work-place scenarios and asked to present clearly outlined expectations and outcomes for each situation.

The responses from these problems will be assessed by industry partners and  selected individuals will be awarded a ticket to the firm’s graduate trainee program.
