The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will apply in the UK, and therefore the University, from 25 May 2018. The GDPR is intended to update and strengthen the data protection legislation in EU member states. It replaces the UK Data Protection Act 1998.
How it affects us at Hallam
In a nutshell, the new GDPR requirements will affect all areas of the University which process personal data (from emails to paper records to social media and more) so that’s essentially everyone! But the University’s GDPR Implementation Group has been working to effect all necessary changes by May 2018 – a list of this work to date is listed on the GDPR pages.
What should we do to prepare?
1) Take a look at the GDPR 8 key changes and what it means for SHU.
2) Bring your questions to a GDPR drop in session run by Governance Services and get expert advice about GDPR and what it means for you and your team:
- 24 May – 1030-1130 – Charles Street 12.2.19
- 5 June – 1330-1530 – Charles Street 12.4.18
- 7 June – 1100-1300 – Heart of the Campus HC.0.07
3) You can also contact DPO@shu.ac.uk (Governance Services) or your local contact on the Implementation Group (these details can be found on the last slide of GDPR 8 key changes and what it means for SHU).
The dedicated GDPR pages will continue to provide resources on how you can be data smart including upcoming training, future drop in sessions, FAQs and more. As more resources are made available on the pages they will be published through central communications channels (Eview, staff intranet, staff Twitter account) as well as via local contacts in the Implementation Group.
Be aware – GDPR Privacy Phishing Scams
Do watch out for scams relating to GDPR. There’s no indication that the SHU community is being targeted but do be careful when dealing with these types of emails – both at work and at home. You can find out more on the IT Security Blog.
