GDPR is coming – but don’t panic!

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25 May this year. It’s a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU).

Many of the GDPR’s main concepts and principles are much the same as those in the current Data Protection Act (DPA), which means we are already largely compliant. However, there are new elements and significant enhancements within GDPR, so we will have to do some things for the first time and some things differently. There is a team at Sheffield Hallam working to ensure we’re prepared for this new legislation and we will be sharing more information with staff soon, including details of training available.

In the meantime, if you’re contact by suppliers or partners asking about our arrangement for GDPR, please refer them to the Information Governance team on ext. 3361 or email h.williamson@shu.ac.uk
