Transition Mentoring: learning through sharing

Our peer mentoring schemes support new students to make the successful transition into university life by matching them with a returning student.

Joining our schemes is a great opportunity for them to get to know their peers through a supportive mentoring relationship, whilst finding out about university services and extracurricular activities.

There are regular social activities and training events to develop their soft-skills and help them to prepare for work in diverse organisations after they graduate.

They’ll progress through mentoring roles during their student journey, adding to their CV. By reflecting on their learning and monitoring their own behaviour, they’ll gain eligibility for Hallam Award which is recognised by employers.

All students are welcome to apply – from any course, level of study and faculty.  Usually new students become mentees and returning students or recent graduates become mentors. However, terms and conditions across our schemes can vary.

Term-time (October to April)

Culture Connect is Sheffield Hallam’s largest one-to-one mentoring scheme which supports new students when they arrive.  Students can join for one or two semesters, depending on their course length.  Culture Connect is embedded in some programmes of study, to support the development of professional skills as well as intercultural competence.

Summer (June to September)

Student Connect is our online scheme, which provides any incoming student the opportunity to ask questions about living and studying in Sheffield before they arrive at the University.  Mentors do not need to be available on campus, as they can provide mentoring support from their home town or country.

Summer Connect provides group mentoring support for our Pre-sessional English students, to help them settle into life in Sheffield whilst they are on campus over the summer.  Mentors must be available on campus at set dates/times, as mentoring sessions are timetabled as part of the mentee’s course.
