Cyber Security at SHU

Recent news stories about major hacking attacks across the world demonstrate the importance of maintaining and continually improving the University’s protection against cybercrime.

As part of its ongoing Cyber Security Programme, Digital Technology Services is currently running two projects to help increase security on our systems.

  1. A new ‘Cyber aware’ online course which will soon be available to all staff in the University. This will give you the necessary training to stay ahead of the cyber criminals and protect yourself and the University from online fraud. It is currently being piloted within DTS and will be rolled out at the start of the next academic year.  More details will be released shortly but in the meantime you can read our IT security blog to keep up to date with the latest advice about staying safe online.
  1. Trial of an increased level of protection (known as two factor authentication) on our VPN service.   Two factor authentication is used by many secure online websites. It works by using two different types of identifying information to allow you to connect to services – in this case, something you know (your password) and something you have (a token sent to your mobile phone or other personal device which generates a passcode). Thank you to all staff in the University who are currently piloting this to help us decide if it should be rolled out further.
