The People Development Team (HR) are delighted to see that mentoring has been cited in our University Strategy. In response to this, and the increasing demand for mentors, a mentor pool has been created.
Mentoring is when someone with more knowledge and experience, in the desired subject area of development, imparts their knowledge, advice and guidance to the mentee. This is most effective when the mentee needs to gain skills and knowledge in the relevant subject area. The mentor will develop the mentee through the use of listening, questioning, supporting, challenging and sharing their experience and advice as appropriate.
The benefits of mentoring can include career enhancement, improved competency in role, increased self efficacy and increased productivity.
Mentoring can help with new roles e.g. when you are new to the organisation or to management, building subject expertise, building technical ability and working on projects or new work streams.
The pool has been designed to make mentoring more accessible and effective. Mentors have volunteered from across the University from a wide range of different backgrounds and staff groups. These mentors are in place to support participants on our development programmes and individual requests.
To support mentoring, a number of resources have also been designed to help both mentees and mentors get the most from the partnership.
