Change effective from:
September 2016.
Summary of change
A new policy on the verification, standardisation and moderation of assessment has been developed to maintain the University’s academic standards. The policy sets out how the University assures the appropriateness of assessment and the accuracy of marking and grading decisions.
The Policy is presented as a series of short policy statements and applies to all taught modules delivered at the University. It should be read by everyone involved in the assessment of students.
Key elements of the policy
- The Policy makes clear:
- the differences between standardisation, moderation and marking and how and when each of these processes are used;
- the relationship between marking (first and second marking) and moderation (internal and external);
- the responsibility of academic departments in maintaining oversight of these processes at local level;
- University requirements regarding documentation of how the processes operate at local level;
- the way in which these process support Departmental Assessment Board processes
- The revised policy document is accompanied by two annexes:
- Annex 1 Collaborative Partners and Policy for the Verification of Assessment and Standardisation and Moderation
- Annex 2 Operational Guidance to support implementation of the Policy for the Verification of Assessment and Standardisation and Moderation of Marking
