Changes to Annual Review – Course Improvement Plans

Change effective from:

August 2016.

Summary of change

The Course Review element of the Annual Review process has been redeveloped and is now re-titled as a Course Improvement Plan (CIP). CIPs will support course leaders, teams and departments in identifying and taking action to improve students’ experience of their courses through ongoing review. Course Leaders should continuously review identified actions and monitor progress against them using the CIP.  The revised CIP form includes updated guidance on how to complete a CIP and clearer links to available data.

What’s different?

  • CIPs are ‘live’ documents, updated throughout the year as statistical data and qualitative feedback on course performance becomes available.
  • CIPs are reviewed within departments, faculties and at each Department Board.
  • Initially, a Course Improvement Plan should have been completed for all courses, by course leaders, to identify actions arising from the NSS and PTES data, by 19 September 2016.
  • The CIP form should then be updated as more information, such as recruitment, retention and DLHE data, becomes available and is reviewed at Department Boards throughout the year.
  • CIPs will feed into the University’s Annual Review Process via Departmental Overview Reports in the usual way. The overall review element of the CIP should be completed by 28 October 2016.
  • Further changes to the Annual Review process are being led by the Continuous Improvement Cycle Working Group.  The group is chaired by Prof. Roger Eccleston.  Next steps, as part of this work, include changes to the format and deadlines for Module Review and Departmental Overviews.
