Course Planning Guidance: International Student Work Placements

Change effective from:

September 2016.

Summary of change

New guidance for Course Planners has been prepared by the University’s UKVI Compliance Manager (Registry Services) concerning the University’s responsibilities for Tier 4 students and other international students studying any course that includes a work placement element.   The guidance is intended to help Course Design and Planning Teams to ensure the University continues to comply with UKVI requirements in relation to work placements.  The guidance will be provided to course planners during the lead-up to validation once faculty business planning approval has been granted for a new course to be developed.  All new course planners who are developing courses designed to attract international students to study in the UK and are intending to include work placements within the programme of study must be aware of the new guidance.

What’s different?

The guidance explains:

  • What Tier 4 Visas and Tier 4 Sponsor Licences are and defines work placements for the purposes of guidance to new course planners.
  • The UKVI requirements for courses with workplace elements and what types of work placement are not permitted for Tier 4 students.
  • The actions that the University must take in order to comply with UKVI requirements on work placements.
  • Explains the consequences if the University does not comply with the requirements; this includes removal of the University’s Sponsor licence which would mean the University is unable to recruit any international students.
  • Lists the key points for course planners to consider when developing a new course.
