‘Getting-by’ in challenging financial circumstances: making sense of the concept of resilience. Inaugural Professorial Lecture – Professor Paul Hickman
Thursday 4 June, 6pm – Room 210, Norfolk Building
With the economic downturn and austerity, attention has focused on how people on low incomes cope and ‘get-by’ in the face of adversity. Their capacity to do so has increasingly been described by both academics and policy makers as resilience. However, while increasingly popular, the term is relatively under-conceptualised and researched.
Drawing on a longitudinal study of neighbourhood change in Northern Ireland, the lecture examines how low-income households in four case study areas have fared in recent times, in doing so offering a critique of the concept of resilience.
Places are free and include light refreshments, but must be booked in advance.
