40 years of Product Design at Sheffield Institute of Arts

1974 saw the first cohort of students embark on a new course at Sheffield City Polytechnic, to study Industrial Design.  Although the institution changed name in 1992 to become Sheffield Hallam University, and the course title has been through many variations over the years to be known as Product Design today, the discipline remains the same. Product or industrial designers imagine and define for mass-production the products that surround us, everything from watches to automobiles.

The Process 40 exhibition features the work of six Sheffield Institute of Arts product designers, either student work from their time on the course, or commercial work as professional designers. The work represents some of the varied product sectors designers work in, such as consumer goods, sports equipment, power tools and industrial products. Everything you see is either production-ready, or already in production and available for sale.
