Updates to software on Staff computers

IS&T has successfully installed the new 2014 suite of software (known as the Managed Desktop) to 2878 office workstations since the start of October. This has been mainly achieved by waking up the workstations at night and the weekend to install the software whilst the workstation is not in use.

Laptop users

If you use a SHU encrypted laptop, please leave it logged out but turned on at a time convenient to you (during lunch, while you are in a meeting or overnight perhaps) to allow your software to be updated.  You will need to do this several times to make sure the process is complete – a notification will pop up during log in to let you know when you are running the new 2014 Managed Desktop.

What if I haven’t logged out of my PC recently?

If you use a PC but don’t log out of it frequently, you may also find your software hasn’t upgraded.  Please remember to log out as often as possible. This is good practice to help keep your computer running efficiently as well as allowing updates to install.  Again, because the software is upgraded in stages overnight, you will need to have logged out and in again several times before you receive the pop up message to say you are running the new 2014 Managed Desktop.
