University offers fully-funded PhD scholarships

Graduates have been encouraged to apply for a range of new, fully-funded PhD scholarships on offer at Sheffield Hallam University, by two of its most successful students.

Up to 40 scholarships are available giving post-graduates the opportunity to study PhDs within the University’s world-leading and emerging areas of research from September 2014.

Liam Slack, 30, is now working as a sports and performance psychologist for the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) – the governing body of English football referees – after completing his PhD last summer in which he researched and implemented a training and development programme in mental toughness for football referees.

He said: “I had a great team behind me at the University’s Centre for Sports and Exercise Science, they made me work for it but the support and the encouragement was always there.”

Two types of scholarships are available;

– The Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) and Graduate Tutor (GT) schemes which are designed to develop the next generation of academics and will see students complete PhD research and have the opportunity to gain university teaching experience.

– The second scholarships are chosen and awarded by Sheffield Hallam’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Philip Jones.

All scholarships include UK/EU tuition fees and a maintenance bursary for three years of full-time study, commencing September 2014. The bursary will be paid at the Research Council UK national rate of £13,863 for 2014/15.

Students can choose to study from a vast range of subject areas including, engineering, science, health, literature and art.

The deadline for all scholarship applications is Tuesday 6th May 2014. For full details of the scholarships on offer in your academic discipline, how to apply and for eligibility criteria please visit http://www.shu.ac.uk/studentships/
