Guidance for pregnant workers

Pregnancy is part of everyday life and its health and safety implications can be adequately addressed by normal health and safety management procedures. Being pregnant or a new mother should not prevent women from working and developing their career.

In many workplaces there are risks which may affect the health and safety of new and expectant mothers and of their child. Working conditions normally considered acceptable may pose a greater risk during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. There are specific laws which require employers to protect the health and safety of their employees who are or in the future could be a new or expectant mother.

A specific risk assessment should be carried out for the pregnant woman or new mother that considers the risks.  Where the risk is unacceptable, modifications should be made to the employee’s job.
