IT Security – Advice about using public Wi-Fi nodes

Public Wi-Fi nodes (or wireless network connection points) are locations where your computer, tablet and smartphone are most vulnerable to attack. You are sharing an Internet connection with other people, so other users may be able to access your device.

Ensure that your device has a firewall and antivirus software and that you have updated your security signatures.  One of the easiest ways for a hacker to attack a device is to pretend to be a [1]‘hotspot’ and wait for someone to connect. Be wary of connecting to ‘hotspots’.  After using a public Wi-Fi node it is good practice to run an anti – virus scan on your device.
