Disabled persons’ refuges and evacuation chairs

Following a substantial investment at both Campuses, every building (that has access to upper floors via a lift or from an adjacent building) has been equipped with:

Disabled person refuges which have 2-way communication systems
These offer a reliable means for anyone using the refuge to communicate with Security to inform them of their location (note that in a few cases the system is linked to a panel in the building entrance and communication is likely to be with a fire marshal or other member of staff).

These are located on staircase landings, in lift lobbies or other suitable locations that are protected by fire doors and close to an escape staircase.  Note – in most cases when the fire alarm is activated it will be a false alarm and there will not be a need to evacuate the person using the refuge.  He/she will be asked to remain in the refuge until the alarm has been silenced.

Evacuation chairs
These are suitable for most people who cannot evacuated via the stairs without assistance.  Chairs are usually located at the top of each staircase (where there are not alternative escape routes, such as those into adjacent buildings).  Additional chairs are provided at the bottom of escape staircases where the escape route is upwards.  These chairs are powered stair climbers.  All security personnel are trained to operate both types of chair.  Note – these evacuation chairs are only to be used in emergencies and must be operated by trained members of staff.
