Role of Prime Numbers in the Digital World, Dr Peter Shiu, Mathematician
This is an important area of current research for both mathematicians and computer scientists. Dr Shiu will give the mathematical background to some of the problems and their solutions, particularly those related to the encoding and decoding of secret messages. Such topics involve security issues in both the commercial world and in governments, something which is of topical concern given recent high profile security leaks.
Peter Shiu is a mathematician with research interest in number theory. He was, for many years, a Reader in Pure Mathematics at Loughborough University and for a time was seconded to work for the government. He retired from the university in 2006 but is still active in his field
