One of the University’s three Equality Objectives is to bring about a step-change in race diversity and equality. The university is committed to making this happen and we will use the Race Equality Charter as a catalyst for change. We are proud to be one of 48 institutions to become a member of the Race Equality Charter. Nationally recognised, the charter promotes the representation, progress and success of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students in Higher Education. We are committed to taking a strategic approach to making cultural and systemic changes that will make a real difference to our staff and students. Participation in the Race Equality Charter will help us assess our current position in relation to race and ethnicity and shape and develop our action plan for change.
Priority areas that we need to address include
- The make-up of the workforce at Sheffield Hallam University does not reflect the diversity of our city and region and we want to change this.
- We have a degree attainment awarding gap for the higher degree classifications (1st and 2:1) between Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and White students and we want to change this.
- We want to understand the experience of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students and ensure we provide access to support, development and opportunities for progression.
Working towards the Race Equality Charter is one way to facilitate the discussion, stimulate action and press for progress on race equality. Come along on the morning of Wednesday 31 October to hear how Hallam has committed to following the Race Equality Charter’s fundamental principles and discuss how we can improve race diversity and equality and bring about a change in institutional culture.
