Our new campus plan places students at the heart of what we do and our university at the heart of the city.

Our campus plan provides a framework for our estate over 20 years  and aims to create a sustainable and flexible campus focused around our city centre heart that will support our ambition as the world’s leading applied university.

The developments will enable us to provide sector-leading, high-quality facilities for learning and teaching, respond to sector changes and achieve outstanding outcomes for our students, our staff and our city.

We will continue to invest in our existing campus’ to ensure facilities continue to match our ambition. By working closely with faculties and directorates we will address condition and maintenance issues whilst responding to teaching needs and pressures.  It is our long term aim to move to a single Sheffield campus in the heart of the city centre.

As part of our commitment to providing a distinctive and exceptional learning environment we will continue to design innovative spaces that are efficient, adaptable and flexible, that will allow us a better meet the needs of our business. We will also be providing additional support to enable a greater and more efficient use of space through improved timetabling and space management. 

The campus plan principles have been developed to provide a guiding framework for our route. The principles grew from discussions with our academic, research and professional leads to ensure the shifting requirements of our university have been considered and will be used to inform all future works on our university estate. We will maintain this collaborative approach as the campus plan evolves to ensure all of our future spaces  deliver the levels of transformation we need whilst responding to user needs.

A lot can change over the life of our masterplan as ways of working, learning and teaching change, and rapidly evolving technology provides new opportunities.  Our masterplan is therefore broken down into four core development phases and all future plans will be reviewed annually alongside University Business Planning.

The first phase will be rolled out over the next five years will see Sheffield Hallam University invest around £220 million into the campus with the following planned developments: 

  • the development of new buildings for the Business School and departments from within the Faculty of Development and Society
  • the creation of new public realm green space at the heart of our campus
  • once the blocks for departments within the Faculty of Development and Society have been completed, we will invest in Collegiate Campus to support the needs of the Health and Wellbeing Faculty
  • Refurbishment of the Students Union building, The HUBS and provision of timetabled activity into this space
  • Starting to address long term maintenance needs of our existing estate, including refurbishment of Owen Building to create a new home for professional services
  • The end of phase 1 will see us demolish the Howard and Surrey buildings in preparation of phase 2 activity.

During the subsequent phases, we will continue to transform our city campus; by developing new facilities, planned refurbishment and redevelopment of existing buildings; all designed to provide the benefit of creating flexibility and variety to accommodate different student needs while delivering our masterplan principles. 

Phase 2 will create a new entrance to Owen Building, creating a new campus heart for Sheffield Hallam across Howard Street.

All of this work will enhance the visibility, engagement and profile of the university in the Sheffield City Region and support its wider regeneration and development. By shining a spotlight on Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University will support and enable collaborative and partnership working helping local businesses grow, boosting the economy of the region.
