Countdown to the launch – 3 days to go!

Come to the launch event, and enjoy a glass of wine and a nibble

In three days time we’ll be celebrating the launch of Collegiate learning centre and the Art in the Library exhibition.  If you haven’t already booked, there are a few tickets still available online – just register at https://artinlibrary.eventbrite.co.uk/  You’ll have the chance to meet some of our exhibiting students, talk to staff from the library about the facilities on offer, hear more about the refurbishment project and take a tour of the new spaces and art on display. The event starts on Wednesday 27th November from 5.00pm in Collegiate learning centre.  We hope to see you there.

Got a way with words? Enter the poetry competition!

The learning centres don’t just provide books, access to PCs, and of course our fantastic art exhibitions.  Did you know they also have poetry on display?

The annual student poetry competition, UniVerse, has been launched this week and is open to all students.  The competition began in 2008, and each year the winning poems are printed onto canvas and displayed in each of the learning centres – the collection of poems has its own dedicated poetry wall on floor 2 of Adsetts!

Along with the winning poems going on display in the learning centres, this popular competition offers Waterstones vouchers, limited edition postcards, and a celebration event rather like a poetry slam for everyone to come and listen to judges and winners alike read from their collections.  All details of how to enter, along with a copy of the rules, entry forms and FAQs are on the Universe blog where students can also see photos of previous winners and their poems, and video footage from last year’s prize-giving event.

It’s fair to say that we love a bit of culture in the learning centres – but we also love to promote the creativity of our students.  Check out the UniVerse pages for more information, or take a look at shuspace, and get writing!

Visual Storytelling – Libraries in animation

Video wall on level 5, Adsetts

Today was almost like a scene from The Apprentice or Dragons Den.  Second year students on the university’s Visual Storytelling theory module took it in turns to pitch their ideas on screen about their perspectives of induction to us – here’s the back story…

The Context

Oksana Fedotova leads the Visual Storytelling module, and invited the learning centres to be a part of the project which we were delighted to accept.

The Client

Learning Centres

The brief

Design an animation or webcomic that presents a student perspective of induction

What will the client do?

The learning centres will publicise the selected student work, document the experience, and use it in the building.

The presentations

14 students pitched their ideas to a panel of three: Oksana Fedotova, Liam Bullingham, and myself. Given that the brief was deliberately broad, we weren’t sure what ideas the students might present – but they seized the challenge with both hands.   Ideas ranged from 2D games concepts, visualising the student journey and featuring learning centre services, characters, cartoons, from the zany to the fantastical and all sorts in between.  Our presenters gave two-minute overviews of their ideas, some played music, others made us laugh – but all gave us food for thought.

Whats next?

The students have three weeks to finish their storyboards and agree the visual concepts, when we’ll return to answer questions and give some more feedback.  That’s all for now, folks! (But we’ll be back with the follow up stories to let you know how everyone is progressing…)

Bright and shiny spaces…

So yesterday we went to Collegiate learning centre to have a look at the refurbishment work – and it looks brilliant!  Over the next few weeks, there’s lots of printing, framing to be done for the exhibition – as well as choosing where the artwork will go.  There’s lots of fresh new spaces for display areas, and we can’t wait to fill them.

It’s Freshers week at Sheffield Hallam University and there are events, helpful staff, and pointers everywhere to help our new students settle in.  Freebies, coffee mornings, advice drop in centres – you name it, we have it on campus and in the student union.

If you are new to the learning centres, our members of staff are always happy to help so don’t be afraid to ask.  If you’re already familiar with the library surroundings, treat yourself to a coffee and browse the artwork on display.

Creative Spark to light up the University

This year is always an exciting time for staff and students, in anticipation of the latest Creative Spark exhibition which launches later this week.

This is the eighth year of the show that displays our creative final year students’ work for their families, friends and the general public at a range of locations across the campus.

Creative Spark takes you on a journey, capturing the moment when a creative spark hits, following it through to its execution.

The Adsetts learning centre is proud to feature some of the talented student productions from the last three Creative Spark exhibitions – from disciplines including fine art, furniture, photography, and this year extending across different faculty courses such as science, sport and health as part of the expansion to Collegiate.

We’ll be bringing highlights and topics of interest in the coming weeks – but in the meantime anyone can visit the Creative Spark 2013 exhibition when it launches on 8th June.

UniVerse event celebrates student poetry talent

Winnners of Sheffield Hallam University’s poetry competition were announced at the UniVerse awards event last night.   UniVerse, which is now in its sixth year and aims to showcase student talent, attracted entries from courses as diverse as health psychology, maths, radiotherapy and oncology and childhood studies, as well as creative writing students.

Hosted by Nuala Devlin, Director of Learning and Information Services, the event brought together a celebratory atmosphere for a range of guests including students and staff, entrants, winners and judges.  Professor Philip Martin, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic), welcomed everyone to the evening and each of the speakers was enthusiastic in their praise of the talent shown throughout the submissions.

UniVerse competition winners with their canvases

Each of the winners accepted their awards, including the sixth form students in the schools competition, and took turns to read a selection of their poems to the audience, creating a fantastic buzz and impressing all with their confidence.   With judges Debjani Chatterjee, Harriet Tarlo and Nell Farrell also reading poems from their own collections, everyone present was able to enjoy different types of poetry from dramatic to humourous, poignant to historical.

Limited edition poetry postcards

Each year the learning centre produces two canvases of the winning student poems. One is displayed at Adsetts on a permanent basis, the other at Collegiate Learning Centre for a year, after which time we offer it to the poet as a keepsake.  Winning poems from the last three years are available to view on Level 2 of the Adsetts Learning Centre, as well as in the Sheffield store of Waterstones who jointly sponsored the event.  Limited edition postcards have been printed of the four winning student poems, and more photographs from the event will be published through twitter and facebook in the coming days.   In the meantime, don’t forget to follow @ArtinAdsetts on twitter and come to the learning centres for a look at our brilliant student art and poetry work.

Art for Collegiate

After the success of Art in Adsetts over the last few years, we’re delighted that we can now start planning to exhibit student art in Collegiate Learning Centre.   Currently in the planning stages, the project aims to bring visual and creative displays to the learning centre, while relating to the subject disciplines that feature strongly on-campus, including health, sport and medical research.  We’ll be looking at work from final year students again which will include film, photography, fine art, sculpture, fashion, design and more, with a view to selecting pieces that enhance the study spaces.

The expansion to Collegiate is being managed alongside the redevelopment of the learning centre, which includes refurbishment of the main study areas upstairs and the PC rooms used for teaching. By the end of the work, the building will be completely refurbished and will be a much more inviting place to study.

Features will include

• a variety of study spaces
• larger desks
• power enabled furniture for better laptop access
• upgraded PCs
• additional Macs
• improved lighting
• more colour
