Students celebrate their achievements at Art in the Library

It was a proud evening for students and their guests to celebrate the launch of Art in the Library at Collegiate learning centre on 27th November.

Joined by staff from across the University, we welcomed three of our recently graduated artists:

  •  Sachin Limbachia, BA (Hons) Graphic Design
  • Kitty Griffiths, BA (Hons) Metalwork and Jewellery
  • Alicia Gledhill, BA (Hons) Creative Arts Practice

Guests were taken on a guided tour of the building, given limited edition postcards to decorate their office, and enjoyed talking to the students and hearing about their experiences.  Tracey Lancaster, Director of Corporate Affairs said: ‘The Art in the Library project puts outstanding, creative and widely diverse student work in the very latest learning spaces, providing flexible, modern and student centred facilities. It captures what our University is all about!’

Each student had their photograph taken with their work, and came away with a feeling of prestige at receiving positive recognition for their achievements.

There will be a spotlight feature on each of them next week but a few highlights from the event included a welcome from Nuala Devlin, Director of Learning and Information Services, and a quote from Lord Robert Winston:

“Offering a creative environment for students is a positive way to encourage their individual learning styles. The concept of having art around the building that reflects the nature of their studies shows thought and care for the student wellbeing on a physical and emotional level.

Lord Winston agreed that students need a bright and vibrant learning space to work in

Students learn in so many different ways, and having something bright or thought-provoking can help them to enjoy their surroundings and promote new ways of thinking. It can bring inspiration and sometimes, a little light relief to the hothouse of the study environment.”

If you missed out on last night’s celebrations, why not come up to Collegiate for a look around the learning centre?  Take a look at some tweets from the night:

Red Bull Extreme Sports Venue
Julie Wyer, BA (Hons) Interior Design

Participation in extreme sports has seen a meteoric rise in the recent years.  Interior Design graduate, Julie Wyer, has combined brand impact with clever use of space in her project ‘Adrenaline Junkie – Red Bull Extreme Sports Venue’.

The powerful visuals were on display during the Creative Spark 2013 exhibition, and stood out with their eye-catching splashes of colour and branding.  Julie’s work will be on display at Collegiate learning centre as part of the new student art exhibition, which will be launched on 27th November.

Julie gave us an artist’s statement to support her work, which explained a little more about the design and the thinking behind it –

“Throughout studying interior design I gained a huge interest in branding and creating a successful customer experience.   The space reinforces the brands values and ethos with exciting innovative design elements such as large voids and bridges connecting different areas. This also makes the brand personal to its clientele and provides small communities within a world of Red Bull.  Red Bull is an already established brand where energy drink sales are consistently high, however Adrenaline Junkie provides added value through customer experience to ultimately gain brand loyalty, expand the brand further and create relationships with their customer base.”

Julie’s portfolio is available to view online at www.juliewyer.com – in the meantime, we’ll be posting information before the launch event here and on twitter and facebook

Where are they now – graduate journeys

This is the second of our “Where are they now” features, catching up with students who have exhibited their work in the learning centres in previous years.

Library visitors viewing Yanli’s display at the Art in Adsetts launch

Following her final year project from the BA (Hons) Interior Design course at Sheffield Hallam University, course lecturers and module leaders nominated Yanli’s piece on a garden restaurant for Park Hill, for display in the Art in Adsetts 2012 exhibition.

Yanli Shen was a model student in this regard, as she submitted a carefully written artist’s statement to be displayed alongside her work to allow audiences to read an interpretation of the piece.  The framed piece was highlighted as part of a tour at the launch exhibition and has received positive feedback from visitors, staff and students alike.  We asked Yanli’s permission to extend the duration of the display of the garden restaurant beyond the academic year, so that we can keep it for a few more years.

We were interested to know what direction Yanli chose after she completed her degree:

“Since graduating with a first class honours degree from the University,  at Hallam, I secured a place on the MA Landscape architecture at Sheffield university. I chose this course to compliment the Parkhill project. I am currently in Edinburgh studying a MFA in Art Space and Nature. This will round off my education perfectly. Each course on completion has offered up the opportunity to further develop my knowledge in a supportive and encouraging environment. In the future, I plan to utilise my skills professionally in the spheres of Interior Design, Landscape, Space and Environmental Art.”

Yanli, and exhibitors like her, are a source of inspiration to staff, students and visitors who use our learning spaces.  By displaying their creativity, we hope to inspire many more as they continue their journey to graduation and beyond.

Thanks and best wishes go to Yanli in her future.

Nature meets technology in The Public Web

Sophie Straw’s design is a fantastic hybrid of nature and technology

This is the first of our series about art work coming soon to Collegiate learning centre.  For her final year Interior Design degree show, Sophie Straw created the Public Web – a multifunctional public space connecting health, culture, leisure and education to create a hub that encourages people to socialise and network within a physical space. Sophie’s project tackles the potential issue of individuals becoming isolated in an era when technology and the mobile internet is increasingly accessible.  Derived from an abstract interpretation of a spider’s web, the design promotes an enhanced public space while addressing social and health issues while embracing digital technology. More images of The Public Web will be on display in the learning centre soon, and in the meantime follow us on twitter at @shuartinadsetts for regular updates!

New exhibition coming soon

During the summer, a lot of work has been going on at Collegiate Learning Centre to redevelop the study spaces and building features.

The new student art collections will reflect some of the subject studied on campus – such as health, wellbeing and sport.

We can’t wait to tell you more about the artists who will be featured so starting from tomorrow, we’ll be running a weekly feature about the upcoming artists and their work.

Watch this space!
