Academic Practice

The Conversation is an independent source of news and views, written by the academic and research community. Editors work with university experts to unlock knowledge for use by the media and wider public – through comment on topical news stories or publication of new research. A virtual session for Hallam academics is being held on Wednesday 19 May (from 2-4pm). The session, led by one of The Conversation’s editors, will cover what The Conversation is about, what they are looking for and how you can pitch and write articles for them. Sign up to book your place – places are limited and available on a first-come-first- served basis. The session is only open to academic and research staff.

Digital Capability

Cyber Security

You will have noticed the increase in online scams since the Covid pandemic started – phishing texts and emails now a part of our daily life. Cyber threats to the Higher Education sector have intensified recently too and, because of the impact a successful attack could have on our IT systems, the data we store and the reputation of the University, we are asking all staff to complete the Cyber Awareness course as soon as possible.

The course was developed by UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) and is designed specifically for staff who work at a University. It includes additional guidance for those whose roles involve research. The module is broken down into sections which you can complete at your own pace and has tips which will help you keep your own personal information and money safe from fraud. You can read more information about keeping the University safe from cyber-attack on the staff intranet.

Spring/Summer Digital Learning Seminar Series

The Digital Learning team are running a series of seminars this Spring/Summer looking at themes around student engagement and wellbeing, assessment and feedback, and readiness for semester one 2021. The sessions and their times are listed on their webpage – there is no need to book, just click the relevant link at the appropriate time to take part.

Conference opportunity

New for this year! – Do you have a successful ‘digital story’ to tell?
For the first time, the Hallam Guild CPP Conference will include a Digital Innovations stream. We are looking for speakers from across Hallam, including lecturers, researchers, and professional services staff, to showcase how they have developed their approach to remote delivery. Please complete our short proposal of 100-150 words for a 20 minute session. Closing date for submissions: Friday 7 May

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

Inclusive Practice

7th May – Community of Inclusive Practice: A Hallam Guild Group. Taken from the Lean Coffee concept, the CIP Coffee sessions 2020/21 will be structured but without an agenda. The group will build topics for discussion together, depending on current issues. This way they can support real time concerns and focus on the needs of the group. 1:00pm – 2:00pm – Reserve your place

Race

Take a look at the Inclusive Hallam Event Series to see more information on their ‘Let’s get comfortable talking about race’ series.

The Academic Development & Diversity team has developed an asynchronous resource to support colleagues to explore this topic in more detail. ‘Micro? Aggressions – recognise, reflect, resist’ is an hour long interactive online session, seeking to identify and raise awareness of the nature and impact of microaggressions and micro-inequities in their various guises. The session proposes two ‘acts of resistance’ that can frame our responses to actions which foster change.

10th May – The Supporting the Mental Wellbeing of our BAME & LGBTQ+ Students
webinar is one in a series of four to support the mental wellbeing of our BAME & LGBTQ+ learner communities via curriculum design. The webinar will explore:

what aspects of curricula & learning environments can impact negatively on BAME and LGBTQ+ (in particular) Trans students’ mental wellbeing? and
what key issues should be considered when designing inclusive curricula to ensure the mental wellbeing needs of students from BAME and LGBTQ+ learners?

25th May – The Centre for Inclusion and Diversity (CfID), University of Bradford is delighted to invite you to the 10th Making Diversity Interventions Count Annual Conference 12.30 – 4pm. This year’s conference focuses on race equality and intersectionality. It explores the varying interventions aimed at addressing systemic racial discrimination, structural and intersectional inequalities with the objective of informing collective understanding and sharing of evidence-based practices in the effective use of diversity interventions in organisations and society. This year also marks the first anniversary of George Floyd’s death which led to a global movement against racial discrimination and structural inequalities. The conference takes a critical look at how the race equality and intersectionality movement across institutions have changed since his death. In Conversation

A series of short video podcasts showcasing our academic colleagues’ experiences of delivering teaching and learning during the pandemic. Each podcast is structured around a specific theme where colleagues can explore the challenges of delivery in the digital void, provide practical solutions and share best practice.

Monthly opportunities to view screencasts and videos that provide a ‘how to’ or provide you with recordings of past activities that align to the university’s strategy.

Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQs): EvaMetrics Tutorial are end to end guidance on new functionality which allows module leaders to acknowledge and feed back to students’ comments.

Semester 2 MEQs – reminder

Feedback is currently being gathered from students on their semester 2 and year-long modules. Module Leaders are able to view student feedback by logging into EvaMetrics (using their normal PC username and password) and selecting the delivery period of “SEM2 2020/21” or “LONG1 2020/21”.

These have been scheduled to close w/c 10 May 2021 and results uploaded to The Source at the end of May.
If you wish to extend the closing date of your MEQ, please contact: ModuleEvaluation@shu.ac.uk
Analysis of all semester 2 and year-long MEQ comments (broken down by department) will begin w/c 17 May. Reports will be sent to Colleges when all MEQs are closed and analysis is complete.

Gardening for Wellbeing

To celebrate National Gardening Week our Internal Communications Manager Michael Cambell has created a short video to talk about his love for gardening and why he thinks its important for our physical and mental health.

Gardening for Wellbeing sessions will be restarting from Friday 21 May, 1pm – 3pm. Open to both staff and students, the group provides an opportunity to meet new people, grow fresh organic edibles and plants and improve your mental health.
