Congratulations to our new Faculty Reader!

​Congratulations to Dr David Broom who has been awarded a Readership by the Professoriate Committee for his outstanding achievements. Dr David Broom is now a Reader of Physical Activity and Health.


David has taught on the physical activity promotion and exercise prescription related modules at SHU since 2007. His research interests are the effects of physical activity and nutritional interventions on energy balance in the prevention and treatment of excess weight and obesity. His expertise is the study of exercise on appetite and appetite related hormones having published numerous peer reviewed articles in high impact factor journals, two of which have amassed over 150 citations each. His most recent exercise and appetite related paper was the Journal of Endocrinology’s most top downloaded non-gold open access article for 2017. He has led and contributed to two British Association of Sport and Exercise Science’s (BASES) expert statements.

David supervises PhD students and has examined ten at multiple UK and international universities. He has presented at many national and international conferences (over 25 conference proceedings) including invited keynotes in China, Taiwan, and Thailand. He is on the editorial advisory board for the ‘Journal of Sports Sciences’, member of BASES Scientific Conference Organising committee and is a Fellow of BASES for services to the organisation and the sport and exercise science community. David has recently been appointed to the Chief Medical Officers Adult Expert Working Group tasked with updating the UK’s physical activity guidelines and is therefore influencing national government policy.

David was recently interviewed by BBC Radio Humberside following his attendance at an event hosted by North Lincolnshire council looking at encouraging healthy lifestyles. David’s comments were used on news bulletins on the station throughout the evening.
