HWB Learning Enhancement Team – What is the DLHE Survey?

Bridget Winwood, Faculty Learning Enhancement Lead: Employability & Enterprise

Given the critical nature of the current DLHE survey, I thought it may be helpful to provide some information.

What is the DLHE Survey?

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey collects information on what all leavers from higher education (HE) programmes are doing six months after qualifying from their HE course.

Owned by HEFCE, materials supplied by HESA who receive the data and compile the reports

What does it do?

The DLHE data indicates the percentage of full‑time learners in employment or further study upon completion of their award.

More critically, it identifies the percentage of leavers in professional/managerial roles

  • HEFCE commissioned annual survey of graduate employment or educational status six months after graduation
  • Responses collected in two waves
  • Specified response rates e.g. 80% FT, 70% PT
  • Coded according to national guidelines to determine outcomes

Current & projected position

2015/16 93% in work or further study & 69% in professional and managerial roles

Target for 2017/18 is 95% in work or further study & 73% in professional/ managerial roles

Target for 2019/20 is 97% in work or further study & 75% in professional/managerial roles

Sample and survey changes

  • The sample has changed
    • 100 more nurses
    • increased numbers in some areas with good highly skilled outcomes, decreases in others
  • The survey will change from DLHE to Graduate Outcomes
  • 15 month census point in 2019
  • Maintaining student contact
  • This survey’s results will be used for an extended period
  • Collection will be outsourced – previous results indicate the difference this means to responses (e.g. Nursing & Midwifery 11/12 = 51% v 92% in 15/16

 So:

  • The DLHE and subsequent Graduate Outcomes (GO) surveys are everybody’s business
  • They are critical to SHU’s standing and reputation
  • We all have a contribution to make
  • 5% of 3rd party responses are currently permissible (details of the operation of the GO survey are still to be decided)
  • Please record the first destination of your finalists to enable 3rd party responses.
