Kids hit our campus for family fun day

More than 1,000 people flooded Sheffield Hallam University campus on Friday 28 July for a family fun day.

From icing biscuits in the kitchen to having a go on a flight simulator and shooting basketball hoops, 1,200 youngsters tried a range of activities on the day. The aim of the event was a bout building a bond between Sheffield hallam and the city as well as fostering a love of life-long learning. According to widening outreach and participation co-ordinator Jenny Lawton-Hunt the atmosphere was ‘electric’.

It was an amazing day. I was thrilled with how the event turned out and this wouldn’t have been possible without all our staff input and hard work. Thank you to all of your efforts. I think we were all a little taken aback by the volume of excited families that arrived at the event within the first couple of hours, indeed before the event had officially started.

Over the course of the day the university welcomed 1100-1200 guests and transformed the campus into a hub of enthusiasm and positivity. There were over 25 different interactive activities that covered the varying interests of 4-13 year olds and their families and included representation from all four faculties.

Since the event, we’ve been overwhelmed by positive feedback from staff and guests via email, from the comments cards we gave out and on social media. We had over 13,500 impressions on our @SHUOutreach account on Friday and the #SHUFamily was also trending in Sheffield.

Feedback includes:

“An amazing day for children, parents and grandparents. All ages catered for. Staff and volunteers very, very good and helpful. Well impressed and would like to attend next year. Well done SHU” (Mother of alumni)

“Epic… My son wants to now be a Physicist, he’s 6, so an inspiring place”.

“My childminder took my girls to the event today. They have all had an amazing time and couldn’t believe how good it was (and free!). I’m a member of staff and it’s really nice to see us working with the community and future students. Well done to all involved.”

“A brilliant afternoon had by my family, the only downside was we weren’t there early enough and wish we could have stayed longer. Superbly organised and loads of interesting things for the kids to see and do. Thank you

There’s also some great photos been shared via our Facebook Family Fun Day event page and of course on #SHUFamily.
