We will soon be moving your telephone service over to the new Unified Comms system
Unified Comms or UC is the system that is replacing our aging analogue phone system. It provides ways to communicate that are relevant to the 21st century yet is simple to use. It combines telephony, voicemail, instant messaging, presence (availability status) and video using a new telephone handset that works in conjunction with your desk top PC or laptop application called Jabber.

If you would like to dig a bit deeper into the new system’s features and find out how to use them check out the full set of online resources here: UC help pages (this area is continually being updated so we would welcome feedback on anything you cannot find or you feel can be improved)
We will leave a 2 sided help sheet on everyone’s desk after deployment. This gives you the basic information you need to use your phone and Jabber. You can find it online here: 2 sided help sheet
Key Pointers
- You can use your desk phone without turning on your computer
- You do not have to use Jabber but if you don’t you will not be able to access some useful features that it provides
- At the moment you may find you can make calls without logging in to your phone. Shortly this functionality will be removed and logged out phones will only be able to call 3333 (IT and Library help), 4444 (Facilities Help), 888 (Emergency Services via Security), 999 (Emergency services but please use 888)
- Make sure you log in to your phone each day. If you don’t you will not receive calls on your phone, people you ring will not see your caller ID details and you will not be notified of missed calls or voicemails.
Position of your new telephone handset
- If there is a specific position on your desk where you would like the new handset to be placed, please indicate with a post-it note or label
Go Live Support
- On the morning of go live, Digital Technology Services IT Help support staff will be in your area to help with any issues. You will also find an email in your in box from IT Help titled “Help with your new phone” providing further help, tips and support to assist you through the first few days of familiarisation.
