What it’s like to be a commuter student

The new semester has begun and many of you may be commuting to campus this year so we have a few tips to help you get the most out of your journeys.

Commuting can get lonely, especially if you have a long journey ahead so it’s great to find fellow commuters to chat to when you’re on your commute and it’s a way of making friends who you have something in common with. Sheffield Hallam University has a Facebook group just for commuters where you can meet people and maybe find a buddy in your area to travel along with!

The cost of transport can add up pretty fast, especially if you are using it every day. There are a few ways you can cut the cost of tickets depending on the mode of transport you most commonly take. For people that catch the train, a railcard will get you 1/3 off the price of your ticket; if you take the tram or the bus then a Travel South Yorkshire 18-22 card will save you 15% on the price of Adult TravelMaster weekly, monthly and yearly passes. If you don’t catch the bus frequently enough to get a season pass don’t forget to show your SHU card on one off journeys to get your ticket for just £1! If you plan on driving to uni then take advantage of SHU’s discounted NCP car park tickets, just scan your ticket at the Hallam Help desk on Owen Level 5.

For those of you that are based at Collegiate campus and have to pass through the city centre, you can catch a FREE shuttle bus from outside The Hubs building straight there. Check out the timetable here.

Along with discount cards other commuting essentials are a pair of headphones and an up to date playlist to get you through your early morning travels. Also make sure you are staying safe on public transport and don’t forget your mask!

Happy travelling.
