Student Profile: Amy Ng

We asked Amy Ng, a student from Hong Kong studying Molecular and Cell Biology, to tell us a bit about her time at Sheffield Hallam, and how she adapted to living in England as a Chinese student.

“As a new student, I felt very welcomed by the friendly staff and my coursemates at Sheffield Hallam and have quickly made many friends from all over the world through the social activities organised by the International Experience Team. I have also joined the International Career Enhancement (ICE) Club as a crew member.

The International Experience Team is very supportive to all crew members and offer us briefings, training sessions and ICE Club Xtra events which ranges from seminars by business leaders to business simulation activities. As a result, I have brushed up on my customer service skills and multicultural awareness, and have enjoyed the time working with and learning from local and International students.

Joining recreational clubs such as SHU Canoe Club and working as a student crew member for ICE Club have helped me gain confidence in interacting with friends from all over the world and working in a diverse environment.  In Sheffield Hallam, you will receive a lot of support for your aspirations.  This is the place for you to transform yourself!”

Many thanks to Amy for telling us how she’s enjoyed her Sheffield Hallam experience; if you’d like to be featured here to tell your story from any of our partner institutions, then please email us: goglobal@shu.ac.uk

Staff Exchange Programme

From Monday 23 May, the International Experience Team hosted guests from all across Europe, including delegates from Spain, Poland and the Czech Republic for a week of Internationalising Student Support; they visited for a five day programme of seeing how the University supports students, as well as to learn about Sheffield itself.

There were talks from support services across the University, tours of the campuses and even some local Sheffield dialect! We had a fantastic time learning from each other and hearing how our cultures differed, leading to some lively debate on how best to  support and communicate with our students while they are studying.

The week was a great success and we’d like to think that our Erasmus visitors got as much out of the exchange as we did; hopefully we’ll get to go across to the continent and see how things work in their countries in the near future!

Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa – summer deadline

Are you an international student and interested in being self-employed in the UK after you graduate?

If you are interested in setting up your own business, you can apply to be considered for endorsement by Sheffield Hallam University. This endorsement is necessary in order to apply for a Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa.

Our application process begins on 15 June. You must first attend an information session at 3.30pm in the Careers and Employability Centre during which we will explain all about the application process and the support we provide. We will have a graduate who is self-employed under Tier 1 GE who will be there to speak about her experiences and answer any questions that you may have.

Sheffield Hallam University has limited places, and the process is competitive. We will select only the strongest business applications.

Please visit Career Hub to find out more about the session.

Social Cycling Sessions

This summer, the Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union are helping to put on taster sports sessions, designed to get you active and experience Sheffield in new ways.

The first of these sessions is a social cycling event, giving you the opportunity to spend some time seeing the sights in the Peak District National Park – some of the most beautiful scenery you can find in the UK.

Collection of your bike and helmet is from the HUBS at 9.45am or 10am at Collegiate Campus and a coach will then take you to explore the Peaks. The sessions run on the following dates:

12 June, 19 June, 25 June, 10 July, 16 July and 24 July

Book your place in advance at the Hallam Active reception.

Culture Connect – Smita Poojary profile

Here at GoGlobal, we like to feature students and their achievements – it’s why we promote opportunities to you all! In this article, we’re featuring Smita Poojary, an international student on an MBA Placement.

Why did you want to join the Culture Connect mentor scheme, and what were you hoping to get out of it?

The main aim of participating in this scheme was to learn about a different culture and meet new people. I wanted to learn how cultures vary and find out about people’s experiences of living in other parts of the world . I wanted to explore more about how cultures vary but do have a common base.

How has being on the scheme benefited you?

I got a good friend in my mentee; in addition, it has motivated me to develop my skills which I have not been able to dedicate enough time to during my studies. It was an independent process where in the mentor and mentee had the freedom of meeting at a place and time convenient to them. Nothing is enforced upon you, no particular rules, and no specific topics of discussions. We could discuss any topic of our choice, leading to more cultural exchange of thoughts and experiences. This flexibility meant that I could fit the scheme around my studies, meaning my work and research wasn’t interrupted by my mentoring schedule.

What are you aspirations for the future?

Through the cultural awareness I have gained by participating in this scheme, I have been able to evolve as a person. I can interact with new people more effectively now, and I do not feel nervous or weird going to places where I do not know anyone. I am more comfortable with myself and the environment I am in; my journey as a mentor has helped me give back to the university in some way.

We love to hear from students who have had a positive experience by being a part of our schemes; if you’d like to be featured on our blog, then please email us here and we can make it happen!
