Our cross-cultural peer mentoring scheme helps new students settle into university life and meet friends from around the world.

Why you should become a mentee or mentor

This is a great opportunity to

  • get to know someone through a one-to-one supportive mentoring relationship
  • develop your cultural awareness and learn about different traditions
  • attend social activities and regular soft skills training with other members
  • prepare for work in diverse organisations and add to your CV
  • gain eligibility for the Hallam Award which is recognised by employers

Additional support

You will also be allocated to a learning set – a small, intimate group of mentees or mentors of different nationalities which enables you to gain a wide range of perspectives. You can discuss challenges and share helpful advice during your time on the scheme.

We are pleased to invite Paul Treherne to the University on Friday 5 June 2015. Paul is currently Service and Sales Manager at HSBC Sheffield and will talk to you about leading a team and delivering fantastic customer service.

This session is open to all students and will give a valuable insight into working in a large organisation and some valuable tips about dealing with customers.

Do you speak Mandarin?

Mandarin speakers are required for research into Psychometric test Developments.

Are you aware that online tests are often used by employers when they are looking to recruit graduates? Many use verbal, numerical and logical thinking tests. Do you wonder what your score would be if the test was in Mandarin? How would this score compare to the same test written in English?

The Careers and Employment Service are taking part in a research project with test publishers, Team Focus, to try to answer such questions and would like to ask you to participate.  In return you will not only get the chance to practise some of these tests but you will also receive a report that we hope you will find useful.

The tests that are available for you to take are

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Abstract reasoning
  • Personality Type Indicator

The trial is continuing throughout the summer.

Psychometric tests for Chinese students (Profiling for Success)

Have you experienced taking a verbal or numerical psychometric test in the UK? Have you wondered what your score would have been if the test had been in Mandarin? Would you like to compare your results across both languages?

The Careers and Employment Service are taking part in a research project to try to answer such questions and would like to ask for your participation.  In return you will not only get the chance to practise some of these tests but you will also receive a report that we hope you will find useful.

To learn more about this opportunity please attend a briefing session on Tuesday 28 April at 1pm at the Careers and Employability Centre. The briefing will last just under an hour and you will have chance to view some of the test reports . The tests that are available for you to take are

Social Enterprise Social

Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union, University of Sheffield EnterprisePhoto-25-02-2015-17-50-28 & Union St are collaborating to make the Social Enterprise Social happen. We want Sheffield to be a hub of social enterprise and bring together social entrepreneurs and anyone who is interested in it, to share ideas, be inspired and network. With inspiring guest speakers presenting at each event, updates from key players in the sector and food and refreshments available during the evening what’s not to like? We’ve had over 100 people at each event and hope you will join us at the next one.

There will be a panel of UnLtd Award winners who will discuss their journey of entrepreneurial success. UnLtd will help host the event and will inform us of the different funding opportunities available.
