Radon monitor

Over the coming weeks the Sheffield Hallam University Estates Team will start a programme of Radon monitoring.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced by decay processes in rocks that is present in the atmosphere in low concentrations. It can also seep into basements and ground floor rooms of buildings and is present in many homes and workplaces.

If it accumulates to a high concentration, however, it can pose a health risk, so employers have a duty to monitor levels as part of statutory compliance. This exercise is carried out around every ten years.

Over the coming weeks a contractor will visit most ground floor and below ground rooms (approximately 1500 in total) and place a Radon monitor on the wall. A photo is attached for reference. The correct placement is vital to achieving an accurate reading so it is important the monitor is not removed or moved. After three months they will be collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

The person deploying the monitors will be busy and need to work quickly as the monitors start detecting as soon as they are brought into ambient conditions. For this reason we ask that if you have questions, please direct to a member of the Estates Team.
