We are delighted to announce that Sheffield Hallam University has been awarded a bronze level award by Athena SWAN. The department of Engineering and Maths and the Materials and Engineering Research Institute have also been successful in jointly achieving the bronze level award for their areas.
Athena SWAN is a gender equality charter awarded by Advance HE and these accolades recognise that as an institution we have a solid foundation for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff and students. These are the first awards under the new criteria which now covers all genders, all subject areas (not only STEMM), all staff (academic, professional support and technical) and students. The charter also recognises the intersection of gender with ethnicity for our staff and the impact this may have, and, how we will provide an inclusive environment for trans-staff and students.
Sally Jackson, Director of Human Resources & Organisational Development and ULT lead for Equalities, said: “The renewal of our institutional bronze and the conferring of a new departmental bronze award is a fantastic achievement for the University, and also for the Department of Engineering and Maths and MERI – both of which are working hard to recruit and support women in a number of stimulating and important roles.
“Our continued success under the Athena SWAN Charter, demonstrated by this latest set of awards, is testament to the importance we place on gender equality in our University community.
“I look forward to working with colleagues across the University to build on these successes.”
