Are you a current smoker who wants to give up? If so, you can receive support in your effort and contribute to cardiovascular research by taking part in a research study at SHU.
The ethically-approved study, funded by Heart Research UK, aims to ‘bridge a knowledge gap’ regarding the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on the veins and arteries of their users.
All participants will be randomly allocated to one of three groups, receiving either:
- Nicotine-rich e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period as well as advice on how to successfully stop smoking
- Nicotine-free e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period as well as advice on how to successfully stop smoking
- Referral to the NHS stop smoking services and reimbursement for any prescription expenses
Participants’ cholesterol and nicotine dependence will be studied during the research and their arteries will also be examined, along with carbon monoxide in their breath.
Participation in the study is free and assessments will take place at Collegiate Crescent Campus. Participants using their own transport will receive complimentary parking.
Please read the participant information sheet if you are interested in taking part. To receive more information, please contact Dr. Gareth Jones (Tel: 0114 225 4312, E-mail: HeartResearch@shu.ac.uk)
