SHU is celebrating University Mental Health Day next week on Thursday 1st March.
Both campuses will be home to events, activities and stalls, details of which can be found here on the staff information page.
Information for relating to University Mental Health Day, including resources and events for students relating to the day are available here on the Students’ Union website.
Created by UMHAN (University Mental Health Advisors Network) in 2012, University Mental Health Day aims to promote awareness of mental health issues in people who live, work and study in Higher Education settings. A key goal of the day is to break down some of stigma around mental illness to encourage people to reach out if they are struggling with their mental health, or suspect that someone around them may be.
UHMAN hope the day will cultivate a positive mental health community that will:
- Improve students’ and staff’s awareness of support and promote a sense of belonging.
- Improve understanding among students and staff of the role the environment and community can play in protecting student mental health.
- Raise awareness of the specific challenges students face with regards to support for their mental health and influence education institutions and health providers to work collaboratively so all in higher education can thrive
Ongoing mental health support for staff can be found here (including advice for lecturers on supporting students) and for students help is available here.
