Social Media for Learning in Higher Education conference

On Tuesday 19 December SHU will host #SocMedHE17 the third Social Media for Learning in Higher Education conference. This year we have 22 short papers and workshops, from SHU and across 12 other institutions, where we will consider the role that social media for learning can play in addressing the major challenges being faced by Higher Education.

This year’s programme will take an exciting twist! There won’t be any Key Note nor indeed any Key-Not (for those of you lucky enough to see at last year’s conference), but a BYOC – an established un-conference model that works like this.

If you are interested in attending, please take a look at our booking and planning information along with the papers and workshop abstracts.  SHU staff benefit from a reduced conference rate of £150 (you will need an activity/cost code to book, and the Events Team will arrange a finance transfer after 19 December).

Students at #SocMedHE17: As in previous years, we will have a number of free places to award to students to present independently, alongside staff, or to attend as delegates in their own right. These free places will be awarded at the discretion of the organisers in November.  Please note: We may ask them to write a blog post, or be interviewed; they may be influencing formal or informal social media use in their course; studying aspects of social media, or just really engaged in its use for their personal and professional development – we don’t mind! Above all, they need to be interested in, and likely to benefit from the conference.

Please let your students know of this opportunity, and encourage them to find out more at SocMedHE@shu.ac.uk . Although this offer is not open to PhD students, or to staff who also study as students, they can benefit from a reduced student rate of £100.

  • Students have until end Monday 20 November to apply
  • They must be available to attend the whole day at Charles Street on Tuesday 19 December from 9am to 4pm
  • The places do not include the pre-conference social, transport or accommodation
  • Unsuccessful applicants can still book onto the conference, and we will hold the student rate for them
