Motivational Interviewing workshops

Now in its 13th year, the SHU MI workshop series has been delivered to over 3000 front line health, fitness and clinical practitioners. With a complete programme of level 1, 2, 3 and ‘train the trainer’ workshops, the series is ideal for those wishing to gain an introduction to MI, continue their learning or indeed wishing to work toward becoming a MI trainer.

Who should attend a motivational interviewing workshop?

  • health professionals working with patients across a range of health behaviours and rehabilitation including diet/nutrition, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, primary care, sport and exercise, social work and mental health
  • practitioners wishing to become members of MINT and to attend train the trainers (TNT)
  • educators aiming to integrate behaviour change counselling into their curriculum
  • those working across a range of settings practitioners working with clients in a counselling or advisory role.

Aims and objectives of MI
The courses will introduce, develop and evaluate skills in MI, exploring individuals’ ambivalence to change from risk behaviours. The main aims and objectives of the courses are;

  • to develop skills in exploring a client’s ambivalence and readiness for change
  • to identify effective methods of psychotherapeutic counselling techniques for the initiation and maintenance of behaviour change
  • to enable health and fitness professionals to support clients self-determination and self-responsibility for change
  • to support health professionals in self-reflection and provide tools for the self-analysis

All delegates will receive learning packs and training resources as well as ongoing support of electronic resources to support their ongoing development beyond the workshop. A range of teaching approaches are used in order to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable learning environment.

The programme is also supported by an online MI training package (eMIT) developed specifically by SHU for health professionals. All delegates will be given free access to this valuable resource which provides additional resources and applied competence checking in MI.

The MI series of workshops are delivered by members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and offers an experiential programme of MI learning integrating attendees experiences and existing resources.
