The Northern Breech Conference 31 March-1 April

The Sheffield Hallam Midwifery team hosted a collaboration event, The Northern Breech Conference, with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Jessop Wing at the end of March.  This two day event attracted both midwives and obstetricians from all over the world.  The conference featured workshops focusing on the practicality of birthing with breech babies being the focus.  Speakers included,

  • Betty-Anne Daviss, midwife at the Montfort and Ottawa Hospital and an Adjunct Professor in Women’s Studies at Carleton University
  • Helen Dresner Barnes, Citywide 1-1 midwifery team
  • Jane Evans,  UK National Health Service
  • Andrea Galimberti, Clinical Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Jessop Wing
  • Mr Lawrence Impey MBBS FRCOG, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Professor Frank Louwen, Professor of Obstetrics and Perinatology and the Division Chief of Obstetrics and Fetomaternal Medicine at the University of Frankfurt, Germany
  • Anke Reitter, lead Consultant Obstetrician and Feto-Maternal Medicine Specialist at Krankenhaus Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt.
  • Johanna Rhys-Davies, barrister (Birthrights)
  • Paula Schofield, Nurse Director and Head of Midwifery for obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatology and radiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

  • Professor Cathy Warwick CBE, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM)

The Citywide 1-1 Team was formed in 2012, to look after women seeking care outside usual recommended pathways; or who have a range of maternal mental health needs.

Headed by Helen Dresner Barnes, the team is supported by a multidisciplinary group, including managers and obstetricians. The team works on a caseload model of care and are on call 24/7 for their caseload.  This collaborative team model was awarded The Royal College of Midwives’ 2016 ‘Excellence in Midwifery’ award.
